THE CASTLE’S HISTORY AND HILLFORTS

Part of the knights’ hall is set aside for the museum collection – the armoury. It includes the coat of arms of Bruno Zuccolin and a knight’s armour from the 16th century, which belonged to a Venetian doge.

In the large room the different stages of Prem Castle’s development are presented from the 12th century onwards. The room also includes presentations of other castles that once stood in the valley of the River Reka. However, only Prem Castle has been preserved.

In the small room there is a presentation of the hillfort of Sveta Katarina and some other hillforts in the region of Ilirska Bistrica. There is also a display featuring an example of an urn grave. Just above Trnovo, near the church of St. Peter there was a hillfort that was one of the largest on the karst. The fortified settlement referred to as Gradišče or Draga by the locals, was inhabited from prehistoric times until classical antiquity. On the slope located to the east of the settlement there is a burial site where around 320 graves from the Early Iron Age (800 – 500 BC) have been systematically excavated. Most of the graves contained urns, but there were also some skeletons.

The museum collection is cared for by Koper Regional Museum – Ilirska Bistrica branch: www.pokrajinskimuzejkoper.si/si/zbirke/muzejska-zbirka-prem
